I-480 Bridge Repair Project Scheduled to Start in 2017
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) recently announced the project to rehabilitate the I-480 Valley View Bridge is scheduled to begin in 2017 – two years earlier than previously planned.
The aging structure, which stretches eight lanes across the Cuyahoga River in two bridges, needs a deck replacement, among other repairs. The bridges, which first opened in 1977, have been costly to maintain and moving up the date of construction will save the state approximately $18 Million. The $281 Million project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2023.
To maintain the same traffic volume on the bridges, ODOT will build a new four lane bridge in between the two existing bridges and close one bridge at a time. The eastbound side will be closed first while its deck is repaired. In the meantime, traffic will be rerouted onto the newly constructed lanes in the median.
The new bridge in the median will also enable ODOT to make repairs easier in the future and ultimately will give the bridges two additional permanent lanes of traffic once construction work is complete.
